"Don't be afraid to put yourself out there. Research is all about learning things that challenge your previous modes of thinking, that are supposed to push you out of your comfort zone. If the first thing you do (or the second, or the fifth, or the tenth...) doesn't pan out, at least you know for the future -- and that can sometimes be as valuable as success."
