SURF Mentoring

Potential projects/topics: This project focuses on advancing sustainable water purification and resource recovery techniques, specifically using electrodialysis systems for nutrient recovery from urine. Srudets will engage in hands-on research that introduces the fundamentals of water treatment, the principles of ion exchange membranes, and their role in water purification and resource recovery processes. They will develop essential laboratory skills, including system setup, performance testing, and water sample analysis. They will gain exposure to interdisciplinary problem-solving by connecting environmental engineering principles with sustainable resource management.

Potential skills gained: Through their work with me, they will know the basic methods for water sample analysis, such as pH, conductivity, colormetric method for N and P measurement, etc. They will also know how to operate electrodialysis system.

Required qualifications or skills: This project is not limited to students in sepcific majors, but the student is better to have basic sense of chemistry and some experience on chemistry lab.

Direct mentor: Post-doctorate

Research Areas

Wanze Li is a post-doctoral research associate in Dr. Qilin Li’s lab. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Delaware in 2023. Her Ph.D. research focused on the development of catalytic electrochemical processes for water purification, i.e., chloride oxidation, ammonia removal, and nitrate reduction. Currently, she is working on selective membranes for electrodialysis to recover nutrients from urine.
