SURF Mentoring

Potential projects/topics: My research focuses on how people experience social inequities, primarily in the context of race. One specific project I have in mind aims to understand people's perceptions of and support for class-based and race-based affirmative action in higher education. Another potential project is about the racial experience of Asian Americans.

Potential skills gained: Qualitative text coding and analysis, survey development, an understanding of social psychological research

Required qualifications or skills: My projects would be a good fit for students in social sciences, particularly those in psychology, sociology, and political science.

Direct mentor: Faculty/P.I.

Research Areas

Sora Jun is an assistant professor of management in the Organizational Behavior group at the Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University. In her research, Jun uses psychological perspectives to study social hierarchies and inequality, workplace discrimination, and intergroup relations. In one line of research, she is particularly interested in how people recognize, respond to, and navigate intergroup dynamics in hierarchies that are composed of more than two groups. In a second line of research, she investigates processes of hidden group-based inequities: when and why organizational actors fail to recognize problematic workplace inequities such as racial discrimination and sexual harassment when they happen. Her research has been published in leading journals such as Administrative Science Quarterly, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and Psychological Science.
