Current research project: How bacteria move electrons outside their cells by engineering one of their key proteins. By making changes to this protein and testing how it affects the bacteria’s ability to reduce iron, I’m learning which parts are essential for electron transfer. This research connects to big-picture applications like clean energy and environmental sustainability.
Research experience includes...
  • participating in a summer program (such as SURF or an REU).

Advice from Sofia
"I think it’s best to think of research as a long-term relationship with your PI and mentor. The longer you’re in a lab and more committed you are, the more you’re able to do and grow and learn, and your mentors will be able to support your better as well."
