SURF Mentoring

Potential projects/topics: Our lab focuses on gas vesicles, which are a class of gas-filled protein nanostructures with properties such as buoyancy, structural stability, and pressure sensitivity. A potential project would explore the genetic engineering of gas vesicle proteins for applications in biomanufacturing and synthetic biology.

Potential skills gained:

  • Wet lab skills: bacterial cell culture, gel electrophoresis, PCR, molecular cloning, heterologous protein expression and purification;
  • Additional skills: experimental design, data analysis, literature review

Required qualifications: STEM major with biology background (biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, etc.) is preferred.

Direct mentor: Graduate Student

Research Areas

The Laboratory for Synthetic Macromolecular Assemblies (SynMA Group) focused on a class of gas-filled protein nanostructures and explores their unique mechanical, acoustic, and optical properties to develop creative solutions for challenges in biomedicine and material science.
