Project Description/ Research Team Goals

The Rummel Bat Lab conducts research on several aspects of bat biology, focusing primarily on movement. Our projects involve studies of bat flight kinematics, thermoregulatory function and mechanisms, comparative wing anatomy, and the migration ecology of our local Mexican free-tailed bats. Issues Addressed 

Bats are the only mammals capable of powered flight, and virtually every aspect of their biology is affected in some way by their flight ability. We study bat flight, the physiological and morphological adaptations that support it, and how flight impacts bat ecology. 

Research Methods and Technology

We use a variety of laboratory, computational, and field techniques, including high-speed videography and video digitization, infrared thermography, muscle physiology, acoustics, and more to study bats.

No prior experience is necessary, although a curiosity and enthusiasm for animals is a must.
