Research readiness is open to students in all majors. Learn about types of research and identify research positions that connect to your goals and interests. Draft application materials for the Sustaining Excellence in Research Program, Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship, or another research experience. 

UNIV 201 is a pre-requisite for SER Scholars and SURF.

This is a flyer for UNIV 201 – Research Readiness  This form has 3 sections –   1.	What is covered in UNIV 201? 2.	Who should take UNIV 201? 3.	Why take UNIV 201?  Section 1 –  UNIV 201 is a course open to all Rice undergraduate students. The course covers topics such as: What is undergraduate research?  Is undergraduate research right for me?  How do I apply for research positions?  Section 2 – Who should take UNIV 201? UNIV 201 is open to all Rice University undergraduate students regardless of majors. It is especially helpful for individuals interested in learning about types of research, want assistance identifying research interests and opportunities, and seeking assistance with drafting application materials for various OURI programs. Section 3 – Why take UNIV 201? UNIV 201 is a pre-requisite for various OURI research programs. These include Sustaining Excellence in Research (SER) and Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF).  SER is a paid research position. As of fall 2023 it is open to students across the Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Engineering, and Business. Students from first-generation, low-income, or under-resourced backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.  SURF is a 10-week summer research program for students from under-resourced backgrounds who lack research experience. SURF scholars are matched with a Rice research mentor. SURF participation includes professional development workshops and a $5,000 reward.
